Sermon Title: "The Seven Last Plagues: Judgment, Mercy, and Deliverance"
Text: Revelation 15–16; Exodus 14–15 (Song of Moses)
Theme: Understanding God’s final judgments and the hope for His sealed people.
I. Introduction
-
Context:
-
The plagues are part of the "wrath of God" (Rev. 14:9–10; 15:1).
-
A warning of love—like a parent screaming to save a child from danger.
-
-
Key Questions:
-
When do the plagues fall?
-
Why does God send them?
-
How can we be protected?
-
II. The Timing of the Plagues
A. After Probation Closes (Rev. 15:5–8):
-
The heavenly temple closes—no more intercession (Rev. 15:8; Heb. 10:19–22).
-
Parallel to Egypt’s plagues: God’s judgments follow rejected mercy.
B. Before Christ’s Return (Rev. 16:17–21):
-
The seventh plague includes the final earthquake (Rev. 6:12–17; 16:18–20).
Supporting Quote:
"The plagues will not fall until after the close of probation... Then the cup of God’s wrath is poured out." (EW 36–37).
III. The Purpose of the Plagues
A. Divine Justice (Rom. 2:5–9):
-
Sinners "treasure up wrath" by rejecting truth (Rev. 16:6—plagues answer persecution of saints).
B. Revelation of God’s Character:
-
Mercy to the sealed (144,000); justice to the impenitent.
-
Parallel: Egypt’s plagues exposed Pharaoh’s hardness (Ex. 9:14–16).
Key Insight:
"The plagues are not universal—or all would perish. But they are the most awful scourges ever known." (GC 628).
IV. The Plagues in Detail
A. First Four Plagues (Localized) (Rev. 16:2–9):
-
Grievous Sores (v. 2): On those with the mark of the beast.
-
Sea to Blood (v. 3): Ecological disaster.
-
Freshwater to Blood (v. 4): Judgment on false spiritual "waters" (Rev. 17:15).
-
Scorching Sun (v. 8–9): Rebels still refuse repentance.
B. Last Three Plagues (Global) (Rev. 16:10–21):
5. Darkness on the Beast’s Throne (v. 10–11): Spiritual blindness (GC 635–636).
6. Euphrates Dried Up (v. 12–16):
- Symbolic: Collapse of Babylon’s support (nations, Rev. 17:15–16).
- Parallel: Red Sea deliverance (Ex. 14–15).
7. Earthquake & Hail (v. 17–21): Final destruction before Christ’s return.
Typology:
-
The Song of Moses (Ex. 15) foreshadows the 144,000’s deliverance (Rev. 15:2–4).
V. How to Escape the Plagues
-
Accept Christ’s Sacrifice:
-
Forgiveness and character transformation (Rev. 7:3; 14:1–5).
-
-
Receive the Seal of God:
-
Settled truth now—intellectually and spiritually (Mar 200).
-
-
Prepare for Crisis:
-
Prayer, mission, and meekness (Zech. 10:1; Matt. 5:5).
-
Promise:
"God’s people will be encircled with light while darkness covers the earth" (GC 636).
VI. Closing Appeal & Prayer
-
Call to Action:
-
"The plagues reveal God’s love—He warns before He judges. Will you heed His voice?"
-
-
Prayer Focus:
-
Personal repentance, church revival, and prophetic mission.
-
Final Thought:
"The plagues are not just about wrath—they’re the prelude to the Song of Moses, sung by the redeemed!"
