Sermon Outline: Discerning the Will of God

Text: Psalm 32:8; Proverbs 3:5-6; Isaiah 30:21; Nehemiah 2; Isaiah 58:10-11

I. Introduction
  • Gratitude for worship – Acknowledging the blessing of gathering in God’s house (Psalm 122:1).

  • Life’s uncertainties – Especially for graduates and young adults facing major decisions (career, finances, relationships, etc.).

  • God’s promise – He knows the future and desires to guide us (Psalm 32:8).

II. How God Reveals His Will
1. Through His Word (Primary Foundation)
  • Scripture: Psalm 119:105 – God’s Word is a lamp to our feet.

  • Principle: If a decision aligns with Scripture, it is safe; if it contradicts, it’s not God’s will (e.g., Sabbath-keeping, moral choices).

  • Key: Willingness to obey (John 7:17).

2. Through Providential Leadings
  • Scripture: Nehemiah 2 – God moved the king’s heart to provide resources for Jerusalem’s rebuilding.

  • Principle: God opens/closes doors in ways we can’t predict (Acts 16:6-10).

  • Key: Pray for discernment and trust His timing.

3. Through the Holy Spirit’s Impressions
  • Scripture: Isaiah 30:21 – A voice behind us saying, “This is the way.”

  • Principle: The Spirit speaks to our conscience (John 14:26).

  • Caution: Must align with Scripture (1 John 4:1).

4. Through a Heart of Service
  • Scripture: Isaiah 58:10-11 – Serving others leads to divine guidance.

  • Principle: God’s will often involves blessing others (Matthew 25:40).

  • Application: Ask, “Which choice allows me to serve God and others best?”

5. Through Godly Counsel
  • Scripture: Proverbs 11:14 – Safety in many counselors.

  • Principle: Seek advice from experienced, spiritually mature believers (not just peers).

  • Example: Rehoboam’s failure (1 Kings 12:8).

6. Through the Voice of Duty
  • Principle: Responsibilities (to family, church, society) reveal God’s will when aligned with His Word (Ecclesiastes 12:13).

  • Example: Jesus’ submission to His Father (Luke 22:42).

III. Closing Encouragement
  • Trust God’s heart – He guides us better than we’d choose for ourselves (Desire of Ages, p. 224).

  • Prayer for guidance – Proverbs 3:5-6 – Acknowledge Him in all ways.

  • Hymn: Be Thou My Vision – Surrendering to God’s plan.

Final Prayer: “Lord, give us wisdom to discern Your will, courage to follow it, and faith to trust Your leading. Amen.”
